OCTOBER 26-27, 2004

Purdue University's Department of Food Science, in conjunction with Purdue's Homeland Security Institute and Krannert School of Management, has developed a learning tool for the food industry to assist helping assure the security of the food supply. This computer simulation allows companies to test their crisis management and decision making skills and provide immediate impacts (public health and economic) to decisions made by the company teams. Other goals are to raise awareness of vulnerabilities, create networking opportunities for those responsible for food biosecurity.

In May, the Department of Food Science held a simulation of a bio-terror attack on the food industry for 36 industry officials. Their feedback, incorporated into today's version of the simulation, will further enhance the experience we offer. Due to overwhelming interest, we are holding this workshop. Company participation is limited to twenty companies, with each company being allowed three representatives.

This is NOT a table-top simulation. This program evolved from a Department of Defense simulation, the software provides a realistic scenario where members of the food industry analyze national and state epidemiological data and press releases. This information along with food supply chain information (ingredients, products, transportation) and inter-company communication, "companies" make decisions on product and material testing. These decisions will allow for further decisions of product holds and recalls. With product traceback capabilities, participants can identify the reasons the scenario occurred.

Jim Moseley, USDA Deputy Secretary, is our keynote speaker and he will address participants at the dinner on Tuesday, October 26. Please see the brochure for further details and registration information.
