FOOD MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS IS SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT

A growth industry

As the largest industry in the United States, food processing employs nearly 2 million people and generates more than $300 billion annually. Consumers drive the food industry, which must adapt to changing social and economic trends around the world. These changes mean new challenges in food products and processing -- and diverse career opportunities for students trained in Food Manufacturing Operations. The Purdue University Department of Food Science is a leader in providing programs of study for students with an interest in this field. A bachelor of science degree in Food Manufacturing Operations (FMO) prepares you to succeed in an industry that accounts for more than 16 percent of the U.S. gross national product. Graduates are qualified for managerial positions in food manufacturing, production, distribution, and procurement.

Flexibility in your studies

As an FMO student, you will combine the study of science and management to learn how industry converts raw products into safe, edible foods and beverages. This field also focuses on the packaging, storage, and delivery of food products. When you graduate, you will have the scientific knowledge and ability to manage state-of-the-art food manufacturing operations.

The Purdue Food Science Department worked with large food manufacturing corporations to develop the flexible FMO curriculum, which lets you choose electives in your specific areas of interest. You also will receive hands-on experience in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), the integration of information technology into all aspects of the food manufacturing process -- from product design, through production, to shipping.

Prepared for the future

In 1998, Purdue University completed construction of one of the largest food science buildings in the world. If you choose Food Manufacturing Operations for your future, you will study in the $22 million Food Science Center for Technical Excellence. This building, home to the fastest-growing food science department in the country, means expanded research experiences and educational opportunities for students --- like you --- at Purdue. FMO graduates also enjoy a 100 percent job placement rate and average annual salaries of more that $34,000.
